It’s been an amazing past few months of continued growth for me. As most of my readers know, the wonders of self-discovery allows so many great learning opportunities, ones that I never would have imagined before.
When it came down to changing my belief systems and self-discovery, there were no magic pills, like Neo in the Matrix. Nor was there a vision of some light or higher being that spoke to me in the voice of Morgan Freeman. Not even a workshop that preached about finding my energy and soul if I joined their program.
Just plain old me. Through conventional ways of seeking help when I needed it, the organic way, and being so fortunate to have the best resources available to me. And of course the hard work, dedication and patience that was required of me.
When we make mistakes in our lives, we need to own it. And that goes beyond words.
Over the past few years, I wanted to take action and change my unhealthy belief systems. Not because I wasn’t happy with myself, but because I made mistakes and hurt those I cared about. It really was that simple.
And once I began to feel the change and began believing in myself again, it made sense for me to reach out to inspire others and impart what I’ve learned.
OK, this may all sound cryptic to you with all this talk about “change” and “self-discovery” and you might be like, “..wha the f#@k is he talking about?!”
Let me simplify it…I found a new hobby…it’s like fixing cars or fixing boats…except it’s really about fixing myself. And this hobby is really becoming a passion of mine, so I decided to write a book about it. But I didn’t want to stop there, so I decided to create a website and blog. Well, as it turns out, there’s people who actually want to read what I have to say, and it’s been kinda fun having them read and comment on the posts! So I decided to take it to the next level and speak about how we can all look after ourselves better…and the new and exciting opportunities keep on comin’! This hobby is keeping me busy and really is enjoyable!
Thus, I’ve been busy lately because:
I’m an author! My book Living with the Dragon will be due out this October. I just received my final edit back and once I give the green light in a few weeks, I’m off to publish it!
I’ve been collaborating with a community Men in Change Program, sharing my stories, experiences and accountability to a group of awesome and brave men, in hopes to inspire change in them as well.
I’ll be presenting a Workshop on Anxiety at this year’s LumoHacks event at SFU (in the next couple of weeks!) Click here for details on this exciting and innovating event to help promote awareness in mental health.
I’ve been invited to speak in Ottawa at the end of this month! I’ll be presenting my personal stories on mental health as well as promoting my book as part of the Strength in Unity Research (funded by Movember and York University). The objective is to promote awareness in mental health especially in Immigrant and Ethnocultural populations in Canada, where it’s often stigmatized.
In the upcoming weeks, I’ll be featured in the HeadsUp Guys website. A site run by UBC and funded by Movember to promote awareness on depression in men.
I really feel like I’m making waves! Some days are rather ordinary and uneventful, yet some days, it feels like I’m making a big splash and a difference to the mental health community. And also to the lives of men and women who struggle with managing anger and abusive behaviors and have the desire to change.
It’s funny because I never would have imagined myself doing all this before – it’s a revitalizing feeling knowing that in my forties I still want to challenge myself with new heights. Who knows what’s next? Book tour? Best selling author? World speaker? I can dream, can’t I? 😉
